Curriculum

ELA (Reading & WRITINGThis year we will start a brand new ELA curriculum called EL Education! We will start the year by reading and writing about stories of human rights. This unit will get going once students' reading abilities have been assessed and we've gotten to know each other a bit. Next we will focus on informational reading and research skills while learning about biodiversity in the rainforest. They'll research and write about ways they can help the rainforest and write personal narratives! Our third unit will be athlete leaders of social change. In this unit we will hone our summarizing skills, comparing and contrasting, and write an opinion essay. Finally, we will end the year by continuing to learn research skills as we investigate the impact of natural disasters and create PSA's about how to stay safe during a natural disaster.

MATH: Our first unit focuses on multiplication and division strategies. Students will really enjoy all of the games and number puzzles in this unit.

SOCIAL STUDIES: We'll start off the year reviewing geography and then move into learning about America's past. In 5th grade we will delve into topics such as Native Americans, early colonial settlements, the American Revolution, and U.S Government, past and present.

SCIENCE: This year we will continue with the FOSS science kits.  5th grade science will include learning about Mixtures and Solutions    , Earth and Sun          , and Living Systems         .  We are also really jazzed about including STEM activities and science challenges throughout the year.
